The National curriculum in England
The National curriculum in England ensures (like Montessori principles) that a school’s curriculum is balanced and broadly based. It is designed to prepare pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities, and experiences of later life. An introduction to the essential knowledge they need to be educated citizens.
Our elementary program is divided into KS1 (taller 1) and KS2 (taller 2). There are also twelve subjects. These are classified as ‘core’ or ‘foundation’. Schools are free to choose how they organise these, providing the content of the national curriculum programmes of study is taught to all pupils.
Numeracy and mathematics
At MSA teachers will use every relevant subject to develop pupils’ mathematical fluency. However, pupils will be taught to apply arithmetic fluently to problems, understand and use measures, make estimates and sense check their work. They will learn to apply their geometric and algebraic understanding and relate their understanding of probability to the notions of risk and uncertainty. They should also understand the cycle of collecting, presenting and analysing data. They will also be taught to apply their mathematics to both routine and non-routine problems across a range of subjects.
Language and literacy
Teachers will develop pupils’ spoken English, reading, writing and vocabulary. Fluency in the English language is an essential foundation for all other subjects and is key to the children’s experience in MSA.
Spoken language
Pupils will be taught to speak clearly and convey ideas confidently using Standard English. They will learn, for example: to justify ideas with reasons; ask questions to check understanding; develop vocabulary and build knowledge; negotiate; evaluate and build on the ideas of others.
Reading and writing
Teachers will develop pupils’ reading and writing to support their acquisition of knowledge. Pupils will be taught to read fluently, understand extended prose (both fiction and non-fiction) and be encouraged to read for pleasure. Pupils will develop the stamina and skills to write at length, with accurate spelling and punctuation. They will be taught the correct use of grammar. Building on what they already know.
The curriculum is taught in English and compulsory Spanish subjects are taught in Spanish.
Therefore, in each of our primary classrooms there are at least 2 teachers: a British tenured teacher who has the qualification and experience in the United Kingdom. And an AMI montessori guide teacher for elementary school (6 to 12 years old). In addition to teaching Physical Education and Music (English).
And of course those contributed by other languages; The teacher titled as a Spanish Teacher and the French teacher.
